Dorothy (Dot) Chambers Grimsley

Dorothy (Dot) Chambers Grimsley of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away in hospice care Saturday May 27, 2023 at the age of 97. Dot was born in Miller County, Georgia, on October 22, 1925, to Edd Green and Eddie Mosely Chambers. She graduated from Miller County High School where she knew her future husband, Garland Grimsley. They eloped and were married in 1944 during Garland's leave from the US Army Air Corp. After the war ended, they moved to Albany, GA, then to Ocala, FL, and settled in Tallahassee in 1954. After her younger daughter began kindergarten, Dot returned to work. She was employed with the Florida Education Association for ten years, then the Florida State Attorneys' Office until her retirement in 1985. She and Garland traveled extensively after retiring and spent each September in Panama City Beach. Dot was devoted to her family and her church. As a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years, she sang in the First Joy Choir and traveled with them to perform locally, and in other states. She spent many hours working in the yard, tending flowers, and keeping the birdbath filled. She was excellent in everything she did, from cooking the best chicken and dumplings to making clothes for her children and grandchildren, to her beautiful handwriting. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, three sisters, and her husband of 59 years, Garland. She is survived by her daughters Diane Lawhon (Les) and Jean Mueller (Mike); grandchildren Kirk Toney, Lisa Bedrosian, Erin Bearman (James), and A.G. Mueller (Dana); and great-grandchildren Ani Bedrosian, and Gavin and Ava Bearman; step grandchildren Debbie Casey (Mike) and family, and Glenn Lawhon. Also, her brother Jerry Chambers (Gladys), brother-in-law Dr. Joe Grimsley (Tina), sisters-in-law Jackie Chambers and Joy Newton, and 29 nephews and nieces and their families. We are thankful for all her wonderful and loving caregivers at Pacifica Woodmont. A funeral service will be held Thursday June 1, 2023 at 3:00pm, with a visitation one hour prior to the service at Bevis Funeral Home, 200 John Knox Road, Tallahassee.
