Douglas Dwight Hammons

Douglas Dwight Hammons, at the age of 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Douglas (Doug) was born in LaGrange, Georgia on September 16, 1943, to Rufus J. Hammons and wife, Catherine Louise Hammons. The family moved to Tallahassee in 1954. Doug graduated from Leon High School in June of 1961 and immediately left for Paris Island, South Carolina to begin training in the United States Marine Corps. After six months of training, he returned home and attended Florida State University. He proudly served in the United States Marines Corps Reserve for eight years. Doug married his wife of 61 years, Peggy Harvey on May 4, 1963. He was the proud father of three daughters, Brenda, Susan, and Cindy. Doug began full time work for his father’s business, Hammons Asphalt Paving, Inc. in 1963 and remained in the construction business until retirement in 2008. During that span he found happiness and success through many friends he met and employees that worked with him. He was proud of the young men who worked with him who have become successful in life with family, work and spiritual endeavors. Doug’s membership and service in many civic and professional organizations blessed his life in so many ways and built a desire to help and support others in need. He was a strong supporter of youth and adult athletes and enjoyed watching them grow into great men and women. Doug was a Christian and Optimist; a combination that provided him with joy, hope and happiness. He was a member of Crawfordville First Baptist Church and had a great love for his extended church family. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Joyce Marie Lee and Patricia Diane Warmack, brother James Donald Hammons, and brothers-in-law Robert Lee and Billy Warmack. Those he leaves behind to love and remember him are his wife Peggy, daughters and sons-in-law Brenda and Joe Mueller, Susan and Stacy Barrineau, and Cindy Hammons; grandchildren Lauren Wilson (Dustin), Colin Barrineau (Liliana), Cameron King (Abigail), and Cierra King; great grandsons Grayson and Silas; brother-in-law Paul Harvey and many nieces and nephews and other extended family members and many great and generous friends. A visitation will be held at Bevis Funeral Home located at 200 John Knox Road on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be Military Honors performed by the United States Marine Corps at 1:00 p.m., followed by a prayer and a few words. Afterwards, family and friends are welcome to stay for refreshments and share their memories of Doug. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to his wife Peggy, the Shands Burn Unit in Gainesville, FL Donate to Burned Warriors Fund (ufhealth.org) or to Big Bend Hospice www.bigbendhospice.org.
