Edward Devane Henderson

Edward Devane Henderson, age 87, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2018. Ed was born on April 22, 1931 in Waycross, Georgia to the late Walter J. Henderson and Rosalie King Henderson. As a young child, the family moved to the Hialeah-Miami Springs Florida area. In 1983, he married Nita and settled in the Miami Kendall area. Upon retirement, they moved to Tallahassee/Havana, Florida to be near some of their many children and grandchildren. From 1953 to 1955, Ed proudly served in the United States Army in the 155th Infantry Regiment. He spent 37 years of his career in law enforcement for Miami-Dade County. He started with the Marine Patrol and the Sheriff’s office. His last 25 years he worked as a detective for the Miami-Dade School Board Police Agency and retired as Captain of the Uniform Police Division. Ed's favorite interests include working on his ancestry and family tree. He loved working on crossword puzzles, playing on the guitar and piano, and eating ice cream. He even dabbled in stained glass with Nita, his wife, creating many treasured pieces. While living on six acres in Havana for 22 years he enjoyed the wildlife as well as being 'Farmer Ed' tending his gardens. Survivors include the love of his life Nita Henderson of 35 years; his children, Sandy Trautman-Alesiana (Romeo) of Orlando, FL, Tim Henderson (Leah) of Quincy, FL, and daughter-in-law Jennifer Jennings; Kathleen Wilcox (Richard) of Tallahassee, FL, Eileen Johnson (and late husband Bob) of Nashville, TN, James Eggert (Brenda) of Whitehouse, TN; Christopher Eggert (Diane) of Tampa, FL, and Teresa Brossette (Michael) of Tallahassee, FL; 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and many nephews, nieces and cousins; siblings Anna Ruth Beale (and late husband Frank) of Tallahassee, FL, and Petie Collier (Doyle) of Marston, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Earl Henderson, Louise Kinsley, David Henderson, Margie Powell; his children Rusty Jennings and John Henderson. The family will be receiving friends and visitors at Bevis Funeral Home (200 John Knox Rd Tallahassee, Florida 32303) on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service with an honors ceremony at 4:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life reception at Mulligan Park (1800 Hermitage Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308) will follow the service at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the American Legion of Florida.
