Gary Allen Scheff, age 80, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away Friday January 24, 2025, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family who had gathered to his side. He was born February 7, 1944, in Bucyrus, Ohio to the late John A. and Betty J. (Miller) Scheff. Gary graduated from Harding High School in 1962 and began working at Marion Power Shovel, although he would tell you he started working at the age of 10 delivering newspapers. He entered the Air Force in 1963, was deployed to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where he worked in electronics and served until he was honorably discharged in 1967. Gary was employed at GTE in Marion, Ohio where he met his wife, Janette (Jan) Buell. His entrepreneurial spirit eventually moved him to start his own business and he spent 25 years in automotive tool sales, including Snap-On Tools and MAC Tools. He often referred to himself as the "Million Mile Man," having spent so many miles on the road. After early retirement, he enjoyed doing home improvement projects, traveling, and going to garage sales looking for the deals. He also gave back to the community through his routine blood and plasma donations and volunteering with Meals on Wheels. What he loved most was spending quality time with family, giving "free" advice, and engaging in quality time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, while providing them with an unending supply of medicine bottles filled with Skittles. Gary is survived by his wife, Jan Scheff of Tallahassee, Florida, his children Jim (Cindy) Scheff of McComb, Ohio, Cyndi (Michael) Hayes of Florence, Mississippi, and Kerrie (Gene) Stillman of Tallahassee, Florida; grandchildren Aaron (Ann) Scheff, Shelby (Cody) Musgrove, Lauren Stillman, Eric Stillman, Ryan Stillman, Tyler Hayes; great grandchildren Carter Scheff, Rylee Scheff, Journey Scheff, Cody Musgrove, Jr., Colton Selman, Landon Henry, Madeline Musgrove, Chloe Kaskie, Harlie Kaskie; his siblings Larry (Rosemary) Scheff of Nevada, Ohio and Vicki McCombs of Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, sister-in-laws Judy Scheff of Marion, Ohio and Susan Buell of Tallahassee, Florida, and Karen (Neil) Hansen, LaVista, Nebraska; brother-in-laws Gary Spires of Birmingham, Alabama and Kevin (Patty) Ryland of Omaha, Nebraska; as well as his many nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Carol Burns, brothers Ronald Scheff and Jerry Scheff; and grandson, Noah Smith. The family will be receiving guests for a visitation at Bevis Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 11:00am with a funeral service to immediately follow at 12:00pm. Following a brief reception, a committal service with military honors will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Florida Elder Care Services, Inc. (eldercarebigbend.org) or Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org).
