Glover "Maurice" Dyer

Glover Maurice Dyer died on June 13, 2013 at the age of 78 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was born in Monticello, Florida on August 25, 1934 as the second child of three to Emma Lou Kersey and Arnold James Dyer. He was a resident of Tallahassee since 1960, and for the past three years he received loving care by the staff and personnel of Harbor Chase Memory Care. Maurice served the US Army in Alaska from 1957-1959 during which Alaska became the 49th state. Upon returning to Tallahassee, Maurice met the love of his life, Sara Duggar, while bowling with his sister. The two were married February 5, 1961. Maurice's profession was carpentry and acoustical ceilings. He worked for Specialty Contractors, Acoustic Engineers, and later formed his own company: Dyer's Acoustical Ceilings and Repair. Maurice's love for nature and the outdoors began as a young child. His maternal grandparents, Mattie and Jesse Kersey, cultivated him as an outdoorsman through fishing and hunting. The traditions of hunting and fishing were pastimes which Maurice enjoyed throughout his life and instilled in his children and grandchildren. Maurice not only hunted and fished, but spent countless hours walking, sitting, and listening to the sounds of nature. He was often found wandering around the yard as he enjoyed being among the fruit trees, shrubs, and plants, which he and Sara planted over the years around their residence. In 1986, Maurice and his wife built a second home--a log cabin in Franklin, North Carolina. This cabin, located in the middle of the smoky mountains, became a beloved retreat and vacation home. Maurice enjoyed roaming the abundant waterfalls and creeks, as well as rocking in his chair during sunrise and sunset on the front porch of the cabin. The family shares his love for this cabin and would spend countless time relaxing, hiking, fishing, exploring, and enjoying nature with him. Maurice also had a passion and love for dogs and cats. He bred Brittany Spaniels for many years and truly enjoyed the love and company that these four legged friends provided. He instilled this love for animals in his children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Sara, Maurice is survived by daughter, Maureen Bussell (Gary); son Scott Barrett Dyer (Alicia); granddaughters Bethany and Kaitlyn Bussell; and Aubry Dyer, all of Tallahassee; sister Carolyn Hamilton (Orrin) of Monticello; niece Valerie Beaudreau (Brian) and great nephews Hunter and Cole, all of Tybee Island, Georgia. Being so young, Aubry, who is only two, will never experience the loving grandfather that the older girls have. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allen Dyer; nephews, Orrin Hamilton Jr. and Curtis Hamilton. The family will receive friends, Monday, June 17, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Bevis Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 18 at Evangel Assembly of God Church, 2300 Old Bainbridge Rd. Tallahassee, FL., with a private family interment at MT. Zion Cemetery in Jefferson County, Florida. Maurice Dyer will be missed dearly by his loved ones, and memorial contributions may be made to the local Alzheimer's Project, Alzheimer's Association, or Big Bend Hospice.
