Harry Ray Spitz III

Harry Ray Spitz III died in his home on Friday, October 7, 2022. Ray was born February 4, 1961, in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, to Catherine Robinson Spitz and Harry Ray Spitz, Jr. Due to his father’s career in the military, Ray moved many times in his earliest years. The family eventually settled back in Charleston, SC, where Ray spent his childhood exploring low country forts and cultivating a deep passion for history. Ray proudly served in the US Army. After leaving the military, he attended Furman University in Greenville, SC, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. Ray worked in multiple industries, including Sage Software in Atlanta, GA, McKesson in Alpharetta, GA, NCR in Athens, GA, and finally at Capital Bank in Tallahassee. While in Atlanta, Ray found a new family in Joanne Brass and her two daughters, and they married in 2004. They weathered the joys and difficulties that life always presents, but his love for them never faltered. Ray settled in the Florida panhandle and returned to the gentle cycle of the tides and coastal pace of life. Like his earliest days, he found joy in exploring the sandy regions with moss-draped oaks. He was always keen to seek out adventure along less traveled roads. An avid reader, Ray would joyfully share his knowledge about an enormous range of topics – anything from history, science fiction, intrigue, classics, comic books, and beyond. He had a mischievous sense of humor, a noble sense of honor, and a softhearted kindness and care for all creatures. Ray was deeply loved by his family and friends, and he will be missed every day. He is predeceased by his father, his namesake and role model. Ray is survived by Joanne Brass, Grace Elena Lara-Brass, and Misa Elizabeth Lara-Brass. Also surviving him are his cherished mother, Catherine Spitz, and sister Happy Amein, as well as her husband, John, and their two daughters, Cami and Caroline. He is also survived by his stepmother Cheryl Jordan-Spitz, aunts Marshall Ann and Marion, his Uncle Charlie, and many treasured cousins and dear friends. A memorial service will be held via Zoom on Saturday, October 22, at 1:00 pm. Ray will make the final trip home to rest in James Island Presbyterian Church cemetery, where also lay his grandfather and grandmother.
