Helen Wessels Ashburn

Helen Wessels Ashburn, 82, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away on June 19, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Helen was born on February 15, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas. She met the love of her life, David, when he was serving in the Army National Guard in San Antonio. At age 18 (David was 19) they were married and went on to have three children and eight grandchildren and to enjoy a wonderful marriage for 63 years. They lived briefly in Kissimmee, Florida and San Antonio, Texas but settled in Tallahassee, Florida. After helping David to complete his master’s degree in education, Helen worked her way up from Secretary to Personnel Officer at the Division of Administrative Hearings for the State of Florida. Helen was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, dedicated to her faith in God and her love for her family and friends. She was known for her extreme kindness and ability to make others feel welcome. A faithful member of Freedom Church (formerly First Assembly of God) she would often invite visitors to, and members of, the church over for a home cooked meal and provide food and comfort to others in times of need. She delighted in every moment spent with each of her eight grandchildren. When they retired, she and David spent years traveling around the world, visiting multiple countries and taking many cruises. She was an avid reader and for many years spent the month of October at Mexico beach reading novels, enjoying countless sunsets and spending time with family and friends who would come to visit. Helen is survived by her husband David, her three children, David Ashburn II (Geralyn), Daniel Ashburn (Rebecca), Dawn Sosnick (Barry); seven grandchildren, Andrew Ashburn (Natalie), Reed Ashburn, Elise Mueller (Thomas), Luke Ashburn, Tehila Ashburn, Shira Ashburn, Samuel Sosnick; siblings Dottie Wessels, Wilbert Wessels, and Pamela Day. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Dorothy Wessels; her sister, Shirley Dunn, and her beloved grandson, Yoni Ashburn. Funeral services will be held at Freedom Church on Saturday June 27 at 11:00am.
