John M. Hutchison

John M. Hutchison, 82, of Tallahassee, FL, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025. A devoted husband of 52 years to Susan, father to Sandi Kooy (Peter) and Michael (Ashlea), grandfather to Kelsey Christman (Clayton) and Tyler, and great grandfather to Kelsey’s children Camdon, Madilyn, and Amelia. John lived a life of faith, service, and love. John was born in Ethel, MS, at his grandmother’s house and his family moved to Syracuse, NY, when he was 5. He attended Syracuse University then transferred to Florida State University and graduated in 1966. John served in the Army from December, 1966, to August, 1968. He served in Vietnam and was very proud of being an Army veteran. In 1972 he earned his MBA from Mississippi College. He had a long banking career in lending and compliance and retired from Capital City Bank in 2009, followed by a short stint with Prime Meridian Bank. After moving to Tallahassee in 1989, John loved supporting all FSU sports. He became a member of Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, and after he retired he dedicated countless hours to maintaining the church grounds, insuring they remained a welcoming place of worship and fellowship. Alongside his wife and son, he spearheaded the church’s annual pumpkin patch, a tradition that brought joy and support to the community. His leadership also extended to serving faithfully as church treasurer and participating on numerous committees where his wisdom and dedication made a lasting impact. John had a heart for giving. He was always willing to help those in need, offering generosity and kindness to anyone who crossed his path. His life exemplified the values of compassion and selflessness. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and service that will continue to inspire his family, church, and community. A celebration of his life will be held at Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, 2201 Old Bainbridge Road, Tallahassee, FL 32303, at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 31, followed by a reception. The burial will be held at 2:00 pm at Tallahassee National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, 2201 Old Bainbridge Road, Tallahassee, FL 32303 or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.
