Dr. John Brett Lindsey

John Brett Lindsey, 49, was born March 1, 1966 in Tallahassee, Florida and died December 15, 2015 in Birmingham, Alabama, where he lived with his family and practiced medicine for 19 years. He died suddenly of coronary heart disease after exercising before work this past Tuesday morning. Brett was raised in Tallahassee and graduated from Maclay School in 1984. While at Maclay, he was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team and was also a cartoonist for the school paper. Brett earned his A.A. from Oxford College of Emory University in 1986 and his B.A. in biology from Emory University in Atlanta in 1987. He was vice president of Phi Theta Kappa Scholastic Honorary Society in 1985, a member of the Alpha Epsilon Upsilon Scholastic Honorary Society in 1986, and was awarded the Blue Key Athletic Leadership Award in 1987. Brett obtained his M.D. from the Medical College of the Georgia School of Medicine in Augusta in 1992. He then served his Radiology Residency at the Tulane University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1996. Brett was certified by the American Board of Radiology, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Alabama State Board of Medicine and the Florida State Board of Medicine. Upon completion of his residency in 1996, Brett and his family moved to Birmingham where he established and led the Birmingham Radiological Group, PC. Since 2004 he has served as the Chief of Radiology at the Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama. In 2007-08, he served as the Chief of Medical Staff at the Shelby Baptist Medical Center. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Radiology Society of North America and the American College of Radiology. Brett proudly followed the footsteps of his father, longtime Tallahassee Radiologist Dr. William Frederick Lindsey, who also attended Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia, co-founded Radiology Associates of Tallahassee, and served as the Medical Chief of Staff at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in the late 1960s. Brett is survived by his beloved wife, Mrs. Amy Rogers Lindsey, and his four children, Madeline Kate Lindsey, Caroline Gray Lindsey, Emma Berry Lindsey and William Frederick Lindsey II, all of whom live in Birmingham. Brett is also survived by his parents, Dr. William Frederick Lindsey and Mrs. Jimmie Moore Lindsey of Tallahassee; and his siblings, Fredda Lindsey Ellis of Los Angeles, California, Robert Burton Lindsey of Tallahassee, and David Moore Lindsey of New York City. Brett’s oldest brother, William Scott Lindsey of Tallahassee, predeceased him in 2009. Brett is survived by five nephews and nieces, Andrea Lindsey Barber, Ross Lindsey Ellis, Graham James Ellis, Ashley Moore Ellis, and William Joshua Lindsey. Brett’s surviving in-laws include Marguerite Suber Lindsey, John Ross Ellis, Angela Pettis Lindsey, and Stephen Joseph Kantor. Brett is survived by his in-laws, longtime Tallahassee residents Dr. William Warren Rogers and Mrs. Miriam Arnold Rogers. Professor Rogers is an accomplished professor of southern history at Florida State University. Brett is also survived by his in-laws William Warren Rogers, Jr., Jeffrey Arnold Rogers, and Kate Rogers Berry. Brett often returned to Tallahassee to see his family and because he was a rabid Florida State University football fan from his earliest days. He loved to take his children to F.S.U. football games from California to Florida and places in between. He often accompanied his mother for tailgating before home games in Tallahassee. His passion for F.S.U. football was matched by his affection for animals. He is survived by his beloved and mischievous Bull Mastiff named Chief. The magnitude of the family’s sudden loss is difficult to bear. Brett’s wife Amy and his four children will miss his love and guidance. His girls will miss their father and his only son will miss his best friend. Amy and the children will forever cherish the memories from their vacation home in Watercolor, Florida. This was the place where Brett truly relaxed and loved life spending his time reading by the pool, walking the dogs on the beach, and eating thousands of oysters on the half shell. The members of the Lindsey family will forever miss Brett. For his siblings, many of their earliest memories include him. While the youngest of five noisy children, Brett was often the loudest and sought every goal with intense passion. When he became an adult, he wanted to practice medicine and have a large family, like the one in which he was raised. He accomplished those goals and many more, and his family was rightly proud of how well he had done. We are saddened that he was not able to enjoy his many accomplishments for years to come. His siblings will miss their bright young brother and his parents will miss their baby. The sense of emptiness is still too great to understand, losing Brett so soon after his brother Scott, but the family’s eternal love for Brett and Scott allow us to treasure our memories and continue with our lives, which are so much richer because of them. Funeral services are being held at Faith Presbyterian Church on North Meridian Road in Tallahassee on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 1:00 PM, followed by a graveside ceremony at Roselawn Cemetery.
