Julie Gail Cousins

Tallahassee – Julie G. Cousins, 56, of Tallahassee, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2023, at Big Bend Hospice. Julie was born on July 20, 1966 in Tallahassee daughter of Doris Melton and Henry Ausburn. She lived a life of service to her family and her community. A Registered Nurse, she served in that capacity in a number of healthcare settings, including Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and Big Bend Hospice. In her later career, she put her talents to good use at the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (Division of Medicaid Services), and the Florida Department of Health (Division of Children’s Medical Services and Practice Unit). Most recently, she held the position of Director of Quality Management at Select Medical Hospital. In addition to a busy career, Julie was deeply committed to volunteer work in her church and her community and was devoted to helping others and improving life in her community. She was past CEO and Board Member of The Living Harvest, Co-founder and leadership team member of the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Tallahassee chapter, a certified Guardian Ad Litem volunteer, and an iServe team member a Killearn United Methodist Church. Passionately devoted to her family, she raised three children as a single parent, while continuing to develop her professional skills and move her career forward. At the same time, she always managed to find the time for volunteer efforts aimed at improving the lives of those around her. In the small amount of leisure time she allowed herself, she enjoyed sewing, playing golf, cooking, reading and listening to music while enjoying a nice glass of wine on the back patio of the house she shared with her beloved husband, John. Julie leaves part of her loving and generous soul with her husband, John Cousins (Tallahassee), three children (Christina Fleming, Coolidge, GA; Carlton Walker, Tallahassee, FL; and Steven Walker, Crawfordville, FL); two step-children (Jessica Cousins, Williamsville, NY and Patrick Cousins, Edmond, OK); her mother, Doris Melton, Tallahassee, FL, a sister (Carrie Jones, Tallahassee, FL); a brother (Henry Ausburn, Gardener, NY); and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father, Henry Ausburn.
