Karl Stephen Herbert Thiele

Karl Thiele, beloved son, brother, twin, uncle, boyfriend, tee-ball coach, and undisputed world champion of hitting golf balls into the neighbors' yards, left us on July 11, 2026, at 33 years old. And honestly, if you knew Karl, you know he'd want us to laugh at least as much as we cry telling this story. Karl showed up in the world a minute and a half after his twin brother Kevin, arriving with his built-in best friend already waiting for him. That bond never let up for the next 33 years. If you ever walked through Karl's door, you know exactly what happened next: within about ten seconds, you felt like part of the family. That was just his gift. At 18, viral meningitis threw a curveball at the life Karl had planned. He didn't let it write his story. Instead, he became the guy everyone wanted around — the one who'd go to ridiculous lengths to make you laugh until you cried, usually finishing the job with a perfectly timed “Oh Yeah!” or his signature “There it is!” Those two little phrases became pure Karl, and you can bet they'll keep bringing smiles for a long time to come. A die-hard Notre Dame fan and loyal Chicago Blackhawks fan, Karl's real home field was the backyard at Herb and Kathi's, where the family piled in almost every Sunday for food, fires, sports, and each other. That backyard was the heartbeat of the Thiele family, and Karl was almost always standing right in the middle of it. He was never the uncle parked in a lawn chair watching from a distance. He was in the middle of every fort, every backyard project, every water balloon ambush, every fireworks show, every yard game, and every “okay, just one more inning.” Whether he was tossing baseballs with William, Everett, Bennett, Brendan, Ford, Maggie, and Emma, or getting roped into whatever scheme the kids had cooked up that day, Karl made every single one of them feel like the most important person in the world. He'd recently taken on coaching Bennett and Brendan's tee-ball team, cheering every hit and every catch like it was the World Series. Honestly, we think he mostly signed up because it gave him an official excuse to be a kid again, and nobody was complaining. Karl and his niece Emma had a bond all their own. She'd find her way to him, climb into his lap, and just be with him, and he'd happily go along with her every whim. It didn't need explaining. It just worked. Then, of course, there were the legendary Thiele Christmas Eve golf outings — the annual “tradition” of the brothers launching golf balls through the neighborhood, fully aware they probably shouldn't, and doing it anyway. That was Karl in a nutshell: a little mischief, a lot of laughter, and one more story the family will be telling for years. Being Kevin's twin might be the best thing that ever happened to Karl. They talked every single day, teased each other constantly, threw punches at each other's arms just a bit harder than necessary, got each other into trouble, and got each other right back out of it just as fast. Kevin didn't just lose a brother; he lost his built-in best friend, the one he'd had since before either of them took a breath. Karl was also lucky enough to share his life with his girlfriend, Cristina Rumskas, whose love and support brought him real happiness, and with whom he built a lifetime of memories. He leaves behind his parents, Herbert and Kathi Thiele; his brothers Herbie Thiele (Alison), Eric Thiele (Elizabeth), Brian Thiele, his sister, Kelly Thiele; and his twin, Kevin Thiele (Melodie); his girlfriend, Cristina Rumskas; his nieces and nephews Emma, William, Maggie, Everett, Bennett, Brendan, and Ford; and a huge circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who all got a little luckier for knowing him. They say there's a difference between a father and a dad. The same goes for a brother and a best friend — and for so many of us, Karl was both, at once, without even trying. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 1:00 PM. Located at Bevis Funeral Home on 200 John Knox Rd in Tallahassee, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Shriners Children's in Karl's honor. So here's to Karl, proof that you don't need a fancy title to leave a legacy. Sometimes all it takes is a backyard, a baseball, a bad idea on Christmas Eve, and a whole lot of love. We'll keep the fire going on Sundays, cheer a little louder for Notre Dame, and think of you every time someone says, “We probably shouldn't... but...” We love you, Karl. There it is. Oh yeah.
