Margaret Hamlin Sapp Pettigrew

Margaret Hamlin Sapp Pettigrew, age 95, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, April 4, 2026. She was born on November 24, 1930, in Mayo, Florida, to Raymond Reed Hamlin, Sr. and Minnie Lee Bailey Hamlin. Margaret spent her early years in Leon County on Sun Ray Road and Jefferson County, on Government Farms Road; she was baptized at Elizabeth Baptist Church at a young age and attended Aucilla School in Jefferson County, Florida. After her family moved to W.W. Kelly Road in Leon County, she attended Chaires School and later graduated from Leon High School in 1948. Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished her family above all else. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Joseph Brantley Sapp; her second husband, William Ira Pettigrew; an infant son; two brothers: Raymond Hamlin, Jr. and Colonel Bailey Hamlin; and one sister, Jean Hamlin Bartlett. She is survived by her sister, Eloise Hamlin Wicker of Burbank, California; her children: Jo Anne Sapp Creel (Frank) of Columbus, Mississippi, Raymond Sapp (Donna) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Bruce Sapp (Dianne) of Monticello, Florida, and Sheryl Sapp Hutchinson (Buck) of Tallahassee, Florida; one stepdaughter, Sherrie Pettigrew of Gainesville, Florida; along with 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Margaret began her career as a switchboard operator and later worked as a draftsperson for Centel Telephone Company, retiring in 1986. She found great joy in spending time with her family, working on the farm, gardening, sewing, and cooking. She was especially known for her chicken and dumplings, hummingbird cake, and pound cake. At church potluck dinners, one of the first questions asked was always, “Where are Margaret’s dumplings?” She was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church. Visitation will be held on April 6, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, 200 John Knox Road, Tallahassee, Florida. A funeral service and burial will take place on April 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Indian Springs Baptist Church, 5593 Veterans Memorial Drive, Tallahassee, Florida. The service will be live streamed on the Facebook page of Indian Springs Baptist Church, Tallahassee, Florida. It will be available for viewing for 30 days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indian Springs Baptist Church or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, Tallahassee, Florida 32308.
