Mark Shapiro

Mark Shapiro left his earthly home on January 10, 2025, at the age of 79. He was married to his wife, Barbara (Bobbi) Beals Shapiro, for 30 years. Born in Stamford, CT, Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite Goodman Shapiro and Sidney George Shapiro. Mark attended the University of Connecticut (UCONN) on a football scholarship. He later transferred and completed his BA in Education and an MA in Guidance and Counseling at Murray State University in Kentucky followed by a brief assignment in the Naval Reserves, where he proudly served his country. “Mr. Shapiro” began a forty-four yearlong teaching career in Palm Harbor and Dunedin before he and his family moved to Tallahassee in 1978 where he taught at North Florida Christian School and Cobb Middle School. Mark truly loved working with his students and had a passion for helping current and future educators. Upon retirement, he continued as an adjunct professor at Florida State University where he trained, evaluated and prepared the next generation of teachers, fostering their growth and empowering them to make a positive impact on the lives of students, just as he had done throughout his career. He also enjoyed being involved in Staff Development for the Leon County School Board as well as the Leon County Schools Foundation. Mark was often seen at FSU sporting events. With a passion for baseball, in particular, he loyally supported the Seminoles, having season tickets since 1978, as well as the team he grew up with—the Dodgers! He loved traveling, and some of his favorite trips were to watch the Seminoles at the College World Series. Go Noles! A man of deep Faith, Mark was most proud of accepting Christ as his Savior as a young man. He attended Baptist churches until his marriage to Bobbi. From that point on, together their faith and their marriage were rooted and flourished through their involvement at Killearn United Methodist Church. Mark is survived by his spouse, Bobbi Shapiro; his brother, David Shapiro; sons James (Jay) Shapiro (Debra), Matt Shapiro, and Mike Shapiro (Sarah); step-daughters, Brittney Mayfield (Henry) and Shannon Davis (Matt). He cherished his grandchildren, Noah and Jonah Shapiro, and Kaiya Bennett (Reid); step-grandchildren, Regan and Marshall Mayfield, Kate Frailicks (Jamie), Tim Harris and Ashley Harris; great-grandchildren, Indy and Ellie Frailicks; and several nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at Bevis Funeral Home, 200 John Knox Road, Tallahassee, on Sunday, January 26th at 2:30 PM with a reception immediately following.
