Mary Stoutamire Monfort

Mary Stoutamire Monfort, age 94, of Tallahassee Florida passed away on Monday, October 15, 018. Mary was born August 16, 1924 to Daniel Stoutamire and Daisy Gatlin Stoutamire in Bloxham. She was a lifetime resident of Tallahassee. Mary graduated from Leon High School in 1943. She married Delma Otis Monfort on March 29, 1944. They were married for 70 years. During the World War II they lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico; New Haven, Connecticut and Orlando, Florida among many bases as Delma served in the Army Air Corps. After the war they returned to Tallahassee for the remainder of their lives. Together they formed Monfort Builders which constructed many houses and buildings throughout North Florida. Mary loved to travel and visited many places around the world throughout the years. She enjoyed tending her flower beds, shopping and going out to eat. But more than anything she loved to host large family gatherings. For over 50 years, she opened her home for Thanksgiving Dinners with often more than 50 friends and family in attendance. She had great pool parties and shared her Beacon Hill beach house with family and friends. Many wonderful and happy memories were made and will be cherished by all. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Delma Monfort; father, Daniel Stoutamire; mother Daisy Gatlin Stoutamire; brother, Dixie Stoutamire; sisters, Lucille Bennett, Winifred (Cap’m) McElvar and Grace Lloyd. She is survived by her son, Keith Monfort, daughter-in-law Peggy Monfort and grand daughter Emily Monfort all of Eugene, Oregon. Three extraordinary nieces; Sherry Bell, Vicki McElvar and Daisy Armistead were such a wonderful part of Mary’s entire life. Their tireless love and caring during these past years was a blessing to Mom. We are humbly grateful for their devotion. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Tapestry Senior Living, Big Bend Hospice, and her private caregivers, Felicia Johnson and Tasha Johnson for their care and support during Mary’s illness. Felicia and Tasha are tangible evidence that angels do walk among us. A memorial service for Mary will be held Friday, October 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, 200 John Knox Road. Visitation and fellowship will be held immediately afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), 4550 Montgomery Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814 or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.
