Matthew Lee Spivey

Florida passed away peacefully at his home on November 20, 2017. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, September 22, 1958 to Robert A. Spivey and the late Martha Crocker Spivey. The second of three children, he spent his early years in Williamstown, Massachusetts, before coming to Tallahassee at the age of six. He attended Sealy Elementary School and then RAA Middle School. During his time at RAA his family moved to Cambridge, England where he attended Netherhall Secondary School for Boys. He excelled in basketball and good humor. Upon returning from England he graduated from Leon High School in 1976. Lee then attended Georgia Tech University and the University of Florida and then returned to Tallahassee where he earned his Associate’s Degree from Tallahassee Community College. He then attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and graduated with honors with a degree in Construction Project Management. During this time, he found his vocation as Project Manager for Gary Fritz Contractors where he excelled until his retirement in 2009. This work included a major renovation of the Chez Pierre Restaurant, along with many other business and home remodeling jobs. Lee excelled in cooking and most importantly loved two and four-legged friends who all benefited from the San Luis Mission Dog Park. All his dogs; Ace, Fred, Brandon, Scout and Samson were his best friends throughout life. In 2010, Lee and his father went on a Deer Lake Methodist Church mission trip to Haiti through the church and Lee always said it was one of the most important things he ever did in his life and always talked fondly of the trip. Lee is survived by his wife of 32 years, Lisa Applegate Spivey, his father, Robert Atwood Spivey, his sister, Hope Spivey Stevenson (Jeff), brother Paul Atwood Spivey (Cindy). Five nieces and nephews; Sarah Spivey Stephenson, James Fechet Stephenson III, Robert Andrus Stephenson, Bradley Atwood Spivey and Lee Ann Spivey, as well as a sister-in law Bonnie Applegate Rivenbark (Sam) and his dog Samson. Lee will always be remembered for his huge smile, kind heart and loving spirit. A memorial service will take place on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Deer Lake United Methodist Church at 11:00 am.
