Middleton T. (M. T.) Mustian

Middleton (“M.T.”) Mustian passed away May 3, 2017. He was 96. He’s survived by his wife of 61 years, Jackie Mustian, his children Mark (Greta Sliger), Tallahassee, Perry (Mary), Thomasville, Georgia, and Janet Torrey (Scott), Memphis, Tennessee, and his grandchildren Javonne Taylor, Austin Torrey, Patrick Torrey, Bern Mustian, Eva Mustian and Jackie Mustian. M.T. was born in Texarkana, Texas to Tom and Hattie Mustian and was the middle child of five children. His family lived in East and West Texas, he graduated high school in Atlanta, Texas, and in 1940 he joined the U.S. Army. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant and served in the medical corps in General Patton’s 3rd Army in World War II. He was wounded in the war in the battle for Koblenz, Germany, and was awarded a Purple Heart. After the war he attended Baylor University, received his Bachelor’s degree in 1949, and served as assistant administrator of hospitals in Alexandria, Louisiana and Jackson, Mississippi. He served as CEO of hospitals in Panama City, Florida, Gainesville, Florida, Houston, Texas and finally in Tallahassee, where he served as President and CEO of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for 25 years, from 1964-1989. While at TMH he presided over the expansion of the hospital to its current number of beds, was one of the founders of the Voluntary Hospital of America, Inc. and Voluntary Hospitals of America-Florida, served on the board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, MMI Companies, Inc., Big Bend Hospice Foundation, Santa Fe Healthcare, Inc. Barnett Bank, Tallahassee, and numerous other organizations. The new “Mustian Tower” at TMH is named in his honor. In his retirement, M.T. could be found hunting and fishing, traveling, riding his tractor and growing crops in his garden. A celebration of his life will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2200 North Meridian Road, Tallahassee (32303) on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3PM. The family wishes to thank Visiting Angels, particularly his caregivers Seymour Guy, Canton Enzor, and Jimmy McCallister, Mindy Towler, and the employees of Big Bend Hospice.
