Ray Hodgen Fentriss Jr.

Ray H. Fentriss, Jr. passed away on August 30, 2018 after a series of illnesses. Ray was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina. As a child of a U.S. Army family, he grew up in a number of states, as well as in Japan. In 1955, Ray met and married Jane Murph Morrison Fentriss while both were attending Western Carolina University. In 1956, Ray joined IBM and began a long career in sales and management including working for IBM International in South America, the Middle East, and ultimately in the U.S.S.R. This career gave Ray a life of worldwide work and living in a variety of places, including Greensboro, North Carolina, Tarrytown and Poughkeepsie, New York, Lima, Peru, Montevideo, Uruguay, Paris, France, Greenwich and New Canaan, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., and retiring in Navarre, Florida in 1998. Travels for business and pleasure included all countries in South America, Mexico, Canada, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, U.S.S.R., Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, West Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and more. Ray is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Jane M. Fentriss, his parents Ray H. Fentriss, Sr. and Anna Paralee Reid Fentriss. He is survived by daughters Anna Cam Fentriss (John Craig Knox) of Tallahassee, Florida, and Trina Fentriss (Kevin Rhodes) or Ripley, West Virginia; grandsons Stephen Parkes Fentriss (Madison Jenkinson) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and David Scott Fentriss of Northern California; great-grandchildren Avery Mae Fentriss and Evan Michael Fentriss of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ray is also survived by close cousins Margaret Anne Reid of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Frances Reid Covington of Raleigh, North Carolina. For all his adult life, Ray most enjoyed golf. He enjoyed playing almost everywhere he traveled, and golf was at the center of his retirement. Ray was one of the founding members of the Men’s Golf Association at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Florida, and was awarded the title of Lifetime Honorary Member. Ray enjoyed the company of all his good golf friends and was especially proud of his three holes-in-one he earned during his retirement years. Ray will miss all the friends he came to know and enjoy at HarborChase Assisted Living, including Gene and especially Ruby. Respecting Ray’s wishes for privacy, the family does not plan to hold a service preferring instead to quietly remember and celebrate Ray’s life and accomplishments.
