Rex T. Newman III

Rex Turman Newman, devoted husband, beloved step-father, grandfather and son, died Thursday, June 25, 2015. Rex was born September 22, 1959, to Virginia Newman and Rex T. Newman Jr. in Tampa, Florida, and the family moved to Tallahassee in 1965. Rex graduated from Leon High School and Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He then went on to earn an Associate of Science degree from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, where he received the prestigious Gupton-Jones Scholastic Achievement Award. Rex served under three Florida governors in the Office of Citizens Services, where he received several merit awards for outstanding service from the Office of the Governor. He then entered the funeral profession acting as the Funeral Director for several funeral homes in Florida. Rex met the love of his life, Harumi Stocks, while he was working his way through college. They were married in 1982 and they spent the next 30 plus years together raising a family, sharing life and creating many wonderful memories. Rex was an avid reader, reading five or six books a week. He also loved to watch sports, especially the Florida State Seminole football and basketball teams. His wit, humor and wry comments on an immense variety of subjects. He was always insightful and had a unique perspective on life and he will be sorely missed by the many people he touched throughout his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rex and Agnes Newman, and Pete and Maedell Turman; and his father, Rex T. Newman Jr. He is survived by his wife, Harumi, and two children, Ken Stocks (Melissa) of Quincy and grandchildren Anna and Sophie; Candace Maloman (Stephan) of Fort Lauderdale and grandchild, Jasper. He is also survived by his mother, Virginia Newman; his brothers, Peter Newman (Lori) and their children Peter John, Taylor and Erin; and Brett Newman, all of Tallahassee; as well as his aunt and uncle, Ann and Maj. John Massey (Ret.) of Tampa, several cousins, and other relatives and friends. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life on Monday, June 29 at 11 a.m. at Bevis Funeral Home Chapel, 2710 North Monroe St, Tallahassee, with a celebration of life reception to follow at the home of Peter and Lori Newman.
