Sylvester Paul Shields Sr.

Sylvester Paul Shields, Sr. age 87 entered into rest Sunday, December 17, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was a lifelong resident of Tallahassee, attended Leon High School and Lively Technical College. Sylvester was a Master Appliance Technician and worked with Mays Electric in 1960 which he continued with as it became Mays-Munroe. In 1985 he opened Shields Micro and Appliance in Crawfordville and Tallahassee. Sylvester was talented with his woodworking hobby and was an avid gardener with citrus fruit being his passion. A team with Florida Agriculture visited his grove and named his unique variety the “Shields Grapefruit”. Sylvester also loved fishing in Lake Talquin. He was a longtime member of Generations Church which was formerly Oak City Assembly of God Church where he was actively involved. Sylvester had served as a Deacon and church treasurer. He was preceded in death by a daughter Cynthia Sue Shields; son Jeffrey Dale Shields; grandson Ian Scott Shields; brothers Thomas Settler Shields, Roy Richard Shields, Joseph Lee Shields. Survivors include his wife of 68 years Jean Shields of Tallahassee; sons Paul Shields and his wife Terri of Tallahassee, Kevin Shields of Tallahassee; five grandchildren Jeffey Shields and his wife Cari of Nashville, Tennessee, Candice Shields of Orlando, Florida, Clint Shields and his wife Diane of Climax, Georgia, Wendy Rose Shields of Crawfordville, Florida, Jessica Shields of Kenosha, Wisconsin; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers Estral “Bill” Shields of Tallahassee, Florida, Rev. Charles Jefferson Shields and his wife Linda of Ashland, Kentucky, Don Develard Shields of Tallahassee, Florida. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Generations Church 3080 W. Tennessee Street Tallahassee. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Generations Church 3080 W.
