Katherine “Kitty” Wade Ball (August 26, 1939 - September 10, 2021) Katherine “Kitty” Wade Ball epitomized a joyful life, well-lived! She passed away peacefully following a stroke. Kitty’s passions centered around social justice, delighting in nature’s beauty, cooking, and sharing meals with others. Kitty had a disarming, guileless quality, and trust in the goodness of people; she truly never met a stranger because she saw everyone as a friend. Soon after America enacted a ban on Muslim people, Kitty responded by making the astonishing and wonderful decision to approach a young Muslim woman in a local store and ask to be her friend. This act so captures Kitty’s earnest faith in goodness and real love. Together these two women bonded and grew to better understand their respective religions and cultures through a genuine and deepening friendship over the past four years, joining their social circles. Kitty also celebrated everything about nature -- from holding a hummingbird in her hands and feeling the beating heart while the leg was banded, to her love of gardening, and her eternal pursuit of sunshine. Kitty would often burst into song with lyrics to match any topic of conversation; “You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine” could have been written for her. Kitty was born the daughter of Seaborn McDonald Wade and Katherine “Kitty” Amelia Rogers Wade on August 26, 1939, in Miami, Florida. She called Miami “a magical place” during the 1940s and 50s. Kitty graduated from Edison High School in 1957, and earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Florida State University in 1961. At FSU Kitty was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, the FSU Flying High Circus, Garnet Key, Mortar Board, and the Honor Court, while lettering in badminton and shuffleboard. Kitty married the love of her life, James “Jim” Andrew Ball, III, in 1961; together they raised a beautiful family and remained in Tallahassee for the next 60 years, having celebrated their 60th anniversary just last month. Her vivacious energy was primarily displayed through her faith and community service. Over the years, Kitty led each of the following groups at different times: the local Girl Scouts Council; P.E.O. Sisterhood; the Junior League of Tallahassee; United Methodist Women; and, she was an active member and the first woman to serve as the Council Chairperson of Trinity United Methodist Church. Serving with other volunteers brought Kitty indescribable joy. In later years she worked as a travel agent, helping other people see the world through her own eyes of wonder. Kitty will be dearly missed by her loving husband Jim, and her two beloved children: daughter, Katherine Ball Davidson (David Brown), and son, Andy Ball (Augie Paculdar); as well as her two grandsons whom she adored: Wade Davidson (Mackenzie) and Darryl Davidson (Elizabeth). She is also survived by her two brothers, Mac Wade (Sarah), Tom Wade (Sylvia), and their children and grandchildren; her sisters-in-law Franci Ball Ethridge (Roy), and Nancy Ball Osking, their children and grandchildren; and many dearly loved cousins, extended family and friends. Kitty was predeceased by her parents Seaborn and Kitty Wade. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you volunteer for or make a financial donation to the Girl Scouts. Kitty used to say if she ever won the lottery the first million would go to the Girl Scouts. Contact the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council (located in Jacksonville) at (904) 421-3484 to donate in Kitty’s name to help underserved girls in Tallahassee. Or visit www.girlscouts-gateway.org/support, or through mail to Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, 7077 Bonneval Road, Suite 420, Jacksonville, FL 32216. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Florida, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, 2021. The service will be streamed online at this link: https://youtu.be/rzZuKqFUr3w. A recording of the service can also be viewed online afterwards. After the service the family will greet people outdoors on the front steps of the church.
