Mary Ann (Schmitter) Johnson, 88, passed away on July 4, 2021, at Margaret Z. Dozier House at Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee, FL. She was born in Highland Park, Michigan to Blanche and Ernie Schmitter and was raised in Garden City, Michigan and St. Augustine, Florida. She attended Nazareth College and served for 15 years as a Catholic nun with the Sisters of St. Joseph in Kalamazoo and inner-city Detroit as a teacher. She left the community and moved to Bradenton, Florida where she met her husband, Jerold C. Johnson. They were married for 48 years until Jerry’s passing in 2017.They had one son, Wayne R. “Chip” Johnson II. Mary Ann taught in Sarasota County Schools, including at Gocio Elementary and Palmetto High School, for more than 30 years and was awarded Sarasota County Teacher of the Year. In 1999, she and Jerry retired and moved to Tallahassee to be closer to their son and daughter in law. She was a member, volunteer and religious education teacher at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernie and Blanche Schmitter, her husband, Jerry Johnson, her brothers, Carl Schmitter and Ernie Schmitter, and her sister, Dorothy Schmitter. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Chip and Susan Johnson, and her 3 grandchildren, Pierce, Thomas, and Molly Johnson, all of Tallahassee, her sister, Margaret Stemp, of Prudenville, MI, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Ann had a spirit of pure joy. She had a deep love for the Lord and prayed devoutly every evening for anyone and everyone. She loved people and connecting with them. She adored her family, especially her 3 grandchildren, and they adored their “Mimi". She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. The family wishes to thank her caregiver of the past 8 years, Debbie Potter, for her compassion, friendship and skilled assistance. They are also grateful for the amazing staff and volunteers of the Big Bend Hospice House who cared for her at the end of her earthly life. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Tallahassee, with inurnment at the Tallahassee National Cemetery at a later date.
