Charles Douglas "Doug" Pyle

Charles Douglas Pyle (Doug) was a caring father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He left this world on November 18th, 2024, at the age of 79. He is preceded in death by his mother, Martha Pyle-Sorrie (maiden name Peel), and his father, Fred H. Pyle. Doug is survived by his brother, Dan Pyle (Rachel); his three daughters, Debra Morales (Jack), Sheri Eades (Josh), and Melissa Dodson (Mike); and his 8 grandchildren. Born in Slocomb, AL, to Martha Pyle-Sorrie and Fred H. Pyle, Doug graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee, FL, in 1963. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Florida State University in 1968 before attending Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, where he received his Master’s in Criminal Justice in 1979. Doug started his first job at 15, working part-time as an usher and doorman at the State Theater in Tallahassee, FL, until he graduated from high school. During college, he worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles and later the Department of Insurance. After graduating from FSU, he worked with the Florida Bureau of Conservation as a Conservation Officer until entering the Army in May of 1969. In 1969, Doug volunteered for the U.S. Army and received basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. He then completed advanced training with the 1st Signal Battalion at Fort Monmouth, NJ. In January 1970, he was deployed to Cu Chi, Vietnam, attached to the 25th Infantry Division. While in Vietnam, he was promoted to Specialist 5th Class and was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He returned from Vietnam in November 1970. Doug began his employment with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in January 1971 and worked until June 30, 1997. While with FDLE, he was assigned to the Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tallahassee Regional Offices, serving in roles as Duty Officer, Special Agent, Special Supervisor, and Inspector. He received two Interim Awards for Distinguished Special Agent Supervisor while assigned to the Orlando Regional Office. Doug retired in 1997 and later worked for the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000. He took an OPS position with FDLE in 2000, working on Special Projects under the direction of FDLE management until he terminated employment in 2005. Afterwards, Doug spent time fishing and walking his dogs. He fostered rescue dogs for a couple of years but found he wanted to keep them all and ended up adopting two of his fosters. In lieu of flowers, Doug asks that you please donate to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch, Big Bend Hospice, and Last Hope Rescue. The family will be receiving guests for a visitation at Bevis Funeral Home on Monday, November 25, 2024 from 10:00 - 11:00am to be followed by a committal service with military honors at Tallahassee National Cemetery at 12:00pm.
