Charlotte Quarles Chellman

Charlotte Evelyn Quarles Chellman, 95, of Tallahassee, FL passed away on August 18, 2026 after a 10 year battle from the deterioration of Dementia and peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born May 16, 1931. She was a native of Florence, South Carolina though only lived there for 2-3 days until she was discharged from the hospital as her parents Charles Earnest Quarles and Viva Marguerite Shropshire Quarles were returning home to Atlanta, Georgia where her three older brothers were born. She was raised in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from O’Keefe High School in 1949 where she was a majorette with the high school band and voted “The Cutest” among her classmates in her senior year. She was employed with Retail Credit Co. of Atlanta, Georgia and later in Miami, Florida as well when she and her mother moved to Miami to be close to her older brother Robert and his family as her father had passed away in 1951. She attended the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, and the Lindsey Hopkins Business School in Miami. She met and married Charles Westfield Chellman on May 31, 1953 in Miami, Florida and later moved and lived on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida until Charles received his Master’s Degree in Entomology, at which time she was employed by the University of Florida as a secretary to two professors in the Agriculture - Economics Department. Upon her husband’s graduation, they moved to Vero Beach, Florida where her husband was co-owner of Termite Kill Company and she worked at Indian River Citrus Bank. After her husband sold his ownership in Termite Kill Company, they moved to Gulfport, Mississippi where her husband was employed by the U.S. Government as a Forest Entomologist and she was employed by the U.S. Air Force at the Technical Training Headquarters (in Biloxi), and where in August 1957 their first child, Steven Arthur Chellman was born. Longing to return to Florida, the family of three moved to Orlando, Florida (Orange County) on Haverstraw Avenue and in a new home built from the ground up in 1958 and where three more children were born; Douglas Wesley Chellman in April 1959, Lisa Lynn Chellman in March 1962 and Malcolm Charles Chellman in May 1965. In 1962 her husband accepted a new job as a professional Forrester at the 30,000 acre Tosohatchee Game Preserve in Christmas, Florida (Orange County). The game preserve built a house just for the Chellman family and everyone enjoyed country life. It was at that small Baptist church in Christmas, Florida that the family attended that Charlotte accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1963. After 3 years at Tosohatchee, her husband accepted the position with the State Division of Forestry as the State Forest Entomologist and moved to Tallahassee in August 1965. In Tallahassee, Charlotte was employed at Montgomery Ward in the offices and as Sales Accountability Specialist where she retired after 25 years in 1996, living at 2516 Lake Shore Drive for 33 years, until she sold the house in 1999 after her husband had died in 1995 and the property became a Hotel, which later became Tapestry Senior and Assisted Living. She bought a newly built home and moved to Avalon Estates in Tallahassee in 1999 until that house was sold in 2020 as she moved to Your Life Memory Care in Tallahassee in 2019. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Aunt, a great cook, and always involved in her children’s lives. She made arrangements with her Montgomery Ward employer to always be done with work for the day so as to be home when her children returned home from school. Football and Baseball teams with her sons, Gymnastic Meets all over the country with her daughter who was a member of the Tallahassee Tumbling Tots elite squad, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts where all three of her sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout, PTA meetings with teachers every year with Elementary, Middle, and High School as an education for her children was of the upmost importance. She was a member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church since 1966 and a member of the Ed Wynn Sunday School class of which she thoroughly enjoyed all her classmates, the Sunday school lessons and the social gatherings. In retirement she became a World traveler visiting practically every state except Hawaii. She traveled to Canada to see the country but also her many first cousins and their children as her mother’s 6 siblings were all from and lived in Canada, and almost every country in Europe, along with Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Galapagos Islands, New York City, to name a few. She was a member of the Tallahassee Community Chorus and with the FSU Orchestra, she sang with them on trips to Beijing and Shanghai, China, and in Carnegie Hall in New York. She took many photos on every trip and detailed every photo, doing a diary for every trip, and typed up her diary when returning home and created many photo albums for herself if she ever got to the point where she wouldn’t remember her trips and for her children and grandchildren to enjoy for the day when she would be gone. Charlotte is survived by her children, Steven (Debbie) Chellman, Douglas Chellman, Malcolm (Alicia) Chellman all of Tallahassee and Lisa (Robert) Wieczorek of Elgin, Texas, and her grandchildren, Joshua Chellman, Meghan (Paul) Cunningham, and Kirenna Chellman, along with 43 Nieces & Nephews and numerous cousins in the U.S. and throughout Canada, and her remaining very close best friend from Elementary through High School graduation Class of 1949, Betty Cook Churchill of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and her, brothers Robert (Barbara) Quarles, Neil (Claudia) Quarles, and Russell (Carolyn) Quarles, and 3 Nieces & Nephews, and four other very close friends from her Elementary through High School graduation Class of 1949, Joyce Weatherly Smith, Syble McCalmon Berglund, Barbara Finley Henderson, and Joan Welch. A special appreciation to the staff of Big Bend Hospice and specifically Rebecca Narezo, and to the staff at Your Life Memory Care in Tallahassee where Charlotte was a resident for the last 7 years of her life. Special thanks to Nidia Halstead, Carmita Whitehead, and Regina Hawkins. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Big Bend Hospice or the Ed Wynn Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at Bevis Funeral Home Chapel, 200 John Knox Rd. Tallahassee, FL 32303. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM and the interment will be for family only at Roselawn Cemetery.
