Clarissa Joan Tompkins

Clarissa Joan Tompkins, 86, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away August 13, 2026, leaving a legacy of quiet strength, faith, compassion, service, and deep devotion to her family. Clarissa was born November 23, 1939, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to George Meyer and Esther Johnson Meyer. She was raised primarily in Omaha, where she developed the values of hard work, kindness, and faith. In 1967, she moved to Tallahassee, Florida, which remained her home for the rest of her life. She first married Gerald W. Miller, and together they had three children: Marcie, Cheryl, and Kevin. After their divorce, Clarissa raised her children while earning her nursing degree from Florida State University in 1973, demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience in balancing motherhood and education. Following graduation, she began her nursing career in Quincy, Florida, and later joined Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where she spent many years in the emergency room. She was known for her calm presence, steady professionalism, and deep compassion for patients and families during their most difficult moments. In 1981, Clarissa married O. Harley Tompkins. They shared 18 years of marriage until his passing in 1999. Clarissa enjoyed a variety of creative pursuits, including basket weaving, ceramics, watercolor painting, stained glass, and jewelry making. She was especially proud when her baskets were commissioned and sold at LeMoyne Arts. She also enjoyed beach walks, collecting seashells, and spending time at St. George Island, which brought her peace and joy. Clarissa was a woman of Christian faith who lived with humility and grace. Her values were reflected in the way she cared for her patients, raised her children, and treated others with kindness and respect. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, O. Harley Tompkins; her brother, Stanley Meyer; and her sister, Geraldine Meyer Atwood. She is survived by her children: Marcie Miller Comyns (John Comyns), Cheryl Lee Miller, and Kevin Scott Miller (Susan Miller); six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Louise Meyer Bereuter. Clarissa will be remembered for her gentle strength, her lifelong care for others, and her enduring love for her family. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 26 at 1:00 PM at Faith Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the wonderful care Clarissa received in her final weeks from Big Bend Hospice.
