Dr. Dorothy Cavoures Downing

On November 5, 2018, Dr. Dorothy C. Downing, beloved wife of Ronald A. Downing (d.2012), passed away at the age of 85. Dorothy and her husband were long-time residents of Tallahassee having moved to the area in 1980. Prior to calling Tallahassee home, Dorothy lived in New York City where she was a Professor at Hunter College, Northern Virginia where she worked for the United States Department of Education, and Karlsruhe, Germany where her husband was stationed. Dorothy was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to parents of Greek ancestry. She was proud of her Greek heritage. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and then earned an MA and PhD in Education from Boston University. Dorothy was a faithful member of the Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church and actively supported the annual Tallahassee Greek Food Festival where she tirelessly volunteered for many years. When Dorothy had overcome some challenge or adversity she would jokingly say “…after all I am of Greek heritage.” Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, brother Peter, and sister Katherine. Surviving Dorothy are her nephews Thomas Jenkins, James Jenkins, (Leslie) and their children Genevieve and Alexander, her niece Elizabeth Jenkins (Barney) and their children Gabriel and Sammy, her stepsons, Barry Downing (Mary) and daughter Kayley, Brien Downing (Donna) and sons Matthew and Phillip, and great grandchildren. Dorothy was beloved and will be greatly missed by her family and many other dear friends. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dorothy’s life. The visitation will be at Bevis Funeral Home, 200 John Knox Rd, Tallahassee, FL, Sunday November 11, 6 pm to 8 pm, with a Trisagion at 7:00 PM. The Memorial service will be held at Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, 1645 Phillips Rd, Tallahassee, FL, Monday November 12, 10:30 am. Interment will follow at MeadowWood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, 1645 Phillips Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308. Rocky Bevis of Bevis Funeral Home in Tallahassee (850/385-2193 or www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the family with their arrangements.
