DR Jack Harold Hutchison

Dr. Jack Hutchison, 85, passed away at his home on January 25, 2011. Jack was born in Detroit, MI and had dual citizenship with Canada. He was a U.S. Marine during WW II in the Pacific theater, where he survived as a prisoner of war. Jack believed that “you never stop learning”. He earned his Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counselor Education at the University of Iowa, M.Ed. at Pennsylvania State University, and B.A. at Michigan State University. His adventurous spirit led him to vocational education and serving handicapped people, from Alaska to Florida. He taught at Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and Bowling Green State University, Ohio. He was the first Director of Rehabilitation for the Territory of Alaska and the State Director of Vocational Rehabilitation in Ohio and Florida. He was also the Director of Rehabilitation for Goodwill Industries of America. Jack shared his passion for the “Sport of a Lifetime: Golf” through participation at all levels as well as making custom clubs. Jack played very competitively or assisted with many golf tournaments across the country. There was no limit to Jack's creativity… He was great with his hands in many crafts and proficient in freehand calligraphy. Jack was devoted to community service wherever he lived. Jack is survived by his wife, Dottie (Driskell). Jack was her husband and her best friend and lover for over 30 years. Jack is also survived by his three children: James Hutchison (Peggy) of O'Fallon, IL, Marian Hutchison of Newark, OH, and Robert Hutchison (Vicki) of Columbus, OH, as well as 7 grandchildren. Per his request, Jack's body will be cremated. A Celebration of His Life will be held in the Spring of 2011. All friends and family will be invited to come and share funny and happy stories about "Life with Jack" at that time. Memorial donations may be made in his name to a scholarship fund that is being established at Florida State University in the Professional Golf Management Program. Jack’s family deeply appreciates the outstanding support and care provided by Capital Health Plan, VA Outpatient Clinic and Big Bend Hospice. Dr. Jack Hutchison will be long remembered for his wit and direct approach to life. Jack was an outstanding teacher, innovative administrator, and a creative artist who loved the sport of Golf.
