Lindsay Marie Lewis

Lindsay Marie Lewis, 26, died quietly at home in Tallahassee on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Born in Miami on April 26, 1985, her life was beset from infancy with a rare mitochondrial disorder that left her deaf, legally blind, and unable to walk. Her family's desire for an effective treatment for Lindsay's condition took them to specialists far and wide. While their efforts did not result in a cure for her, she lived well beyond the projected life span of a person with this condition. And in spite of the physical ravages of this incurable disease, Lindsay had a zest for life that never waned. She never met a person she didn't like, and her love for people shone on her face every day of her life. She spent her formative years in Miami, attending school at Blue Lakes, Tropical and Auburndale elementary schools. When her family moved to Tallahassee in 1998, she attended Swift Creek Middle School and Lincoln High School. At age 22, Lindsay proudly graduated from high school. Lindsay understood that she had obstacles not confronted by most of the other people in her life, but she pushed herself to the limits of her abilities. She loved helping people and doing productive work, and for the last several years she folded and stuffed envelopes for all of the membership renewals for the Tallahassee Museum. She loved attending all kinds of sporting events with her family, and was a devoted and wildly enthusiastic Miami Hurricanes fan. Lindsay loved showing off her beautiful jewelry, and always insisted upon being impeccably attired when going out to dinner with her family and friends. She went everywhere her family went, from the tennis tournaments in which her older sister Elle participated, to business trips with her father, to wonderful vacations with the entire family, to trips with her mom to Publix to tease and be teased by the grocery clerks. She loved to laugh and was always in the middle of the celebration, whatever the celebration was! Lindsay was wonderfully thoughtful and caring, and consistently tried to comfort those in pain, and to type computer notes to friends who suffered losses in their lives. Her loss will affect many people, as did her life. She is survived by her devoted parents, Justice R. Fred and Judy Munc Lewis of Tallahassee. As well, she leaves to mourn her loss her beloved sister, Elle Lewis Anderson and her husband Clarke of Houston, Texas, and her young nieces Ellison and Evans Anderson of Houston, to whom she proudly proclaimed herself "Aunt Lindsay." And, of course, she leaves behind a legion of caring and thoughtful friends.
