Maxine Bergeron Glenn

On July 14, 2026, the world lost one of the brightest smiles ever to bless our lives. Maxine Bergeron Glenn passed over peacefully following a long battle with COPD. She was with her two remaining sisters and son at the time of her passing, and fortunately was able to visit with her siblings and grandchildren during her hospital stay. Maxie was born December 15, 1946, in Syracuse, NY to Chanyce Barnes Bergeron and George Paul Bergeron. She was the fifth of seven children, in a vivacious Post-War family who fully embraced all that America had to offer. In 1949, the six children & their parents moved into a GI Bill cottage in Massepequa, Long Island where they resided for 4 years. In 1953, Maxie’s father was transferred to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania working in the Steel Industry. It is in Pittsburgh where Maxie's true character began to take shape: an independent, fearless child always finding a friend to help navigate life. Throughout her early years and during their transition to the South – Maxie spent much of her time at her Grandmother's home at Aspinwall Corners in Henderson, NY. The family homestead went back 8 generations & served as a stop for enslaved people escaping to Canada on the Underground Railroad. She filled her time running to Lake Ontario and exploring all the hidden spots the 1780 home had to offer. In 1957, her father’s job relocated the family to Birmingham, Alabama where Maxie resided for the remainder of her childhood. Maxie adapted to the change in culture quickly, relying on her friendliness, smarts, wit, humor, and smile. Her adventurous & mischievious side flourished – her stories often contained sneaking out, playing basketball & tennis, showing up the boys at recess and pushing the “Southern Lady” stereotype to its limits. Maxie graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1964, taking home a yearbook filled with stories written by her many friends (often referencing her past, present, and future habit of “Raising Hell”). Forever the academic, Maxie attended Wheaton College in Boston. While there she met the love of her life, future husband, and partner in all things, William Love Glenn, attendant of the nearby Babson College. Together they doubled the fun and doubled the stories. Will and Maxie eloped on April 21, 1966, and started their life together in Bayville, NY, where they soon welcomed their son, William Love Glenn, Jr. (b. Feb 1, 1967). In Bayville, she enjoyed racing and cruising with her family on their series of wooden sailboats. She participated in ladies’ sailing, and was a founding member of the Seawanhaka Cruising Class and the Winter Weezers Walking Club. Maxie and Will lived in the aptly named home “Shadow Box” for 35 years together prior to Will’s passing in December of 2003. Professionally, Maxie spent 10 years as the Business Manager of Portledge School and did bookkeeping for Village of Mattinicock, Grenville Bakers Boys Club, and The Creek Club. In her adult years she returned to college and earned her degree in finance from Adelphi University. Maxie was a woman of varied interests. She was a dedicated advocate and defender of Women’s Rights and was a committed volunteer at Planned Parenthood of Greater New York for over 25 years. Maxie was also a creative woman who enjoyed painting, cross-stitch, and meticulously crafting wooden ornaments each Christmas for her friends and family. She was an avid traveler and had many great adventures to destinations such as Europe, Japan, South Africa, Bahamas, and all across the US. According to her, one of her greatest adventures was becoming a grandmother. Shell Point was first discovered by her son, Will Jr, during his college years at FSU. It was a Glenn’s paradise: sailing, windsurfing, oysters, & bars. When Maxie first visited her son in Shell Point, she immediately fell in love with both the atmosphere and the people. Her mind was made up, Shell Point would be home. During their brief but happy retirement, Will and Maxie became active members of the Shell Point community and the Apalachee Bay Yacht Club. Together they enjoyed life on the bay, happily puttering around their beloved cottage on stilts, affectionately named “Putter House”. After the passing of her husband, Maxie chose to remain in the place they had grown to love, making Wakulla County her permanent home. While in Wakulla, she used her talents for good and acted as the ABYC purser for 15 years. She sailed and raced with the local women on Apalachee Bay, representing ABYC at the Gulf Yachting Association Women’s Championship – the Prestigious Knost Cup. Her other local love was the Wakulla County Public Library where she became a long-time member of the local book club. In the mid 2000s, Maxie was diagnosed with COPD, and true to form, she was determined not to slow down or rely on others any more than absolutely necessary. As her needs changed, she sold “Shadowbox” in Bayville, NY, and moved into a beautiful home in Shell Point overlooking Apalachee Bay. There she spent her remaining years, surrounded by breathtaking views, steady bay breezes, and the friendships that have enriched her life. Everyone who knew Maxie would agree — she made the very most of every one of those years. Maxie will be remembered as a strong and lively woman of unconditional generosity, unwavering morals, and a heart that has touched countless lives. She always had an open door for family and friends whether for a weekend, month, or year. Her greatest legacy is not the places she lived or the adventures she embraced, but the love, encouragement, and confidence she inspired in everyone fortunate enough to know her. Maxie is survived by her son William Love Glenn Jr, granddaughter Claire Elise Glenn, grandson John Alden Grice Glenn, granddaughter Emma Grace Glenn, oldest sister Joanna “Jo” Moore, younger sister Roberta “Bobbie” (Bob) Schowalter, younger brother Peter (Sharon) Bergeron, sister-in-law Anne Glenn, sister-in-law Carol Bergeron, and 23 nieces & nephews. Maxie is predeceased by her husband William Love Glenn Sr, oldest brother Alan Bergeron, older sister Manuela “Mickey” (Amos) Switzer, older brother Chris Bergeron, and her parents. Throughout all the different seasons of her life, education was always a defining value for Maxie. She carried that commitment to education into the next generations. She encouraged and supported her son, grandchildren, and many young friends in pursuing their educational goals. Today, all of her grandchildren have earned college degrees – a source of great pride and a lasting reflection of the importance she placed on learning, opportunity, and helping others reach their full potential. Her love of reading remained strong and steadfast throughout her life, and she was always eager to both give and receive book recommendations.
