Sally Newsome Smith

Sally Camille Newsome Smith, 66, passed away on December 29th, 2023 after a 15 year battle with cancer. She moved on from this life peacefully in her home, surrounded by the love and affection of those closest to her. Sally was born in Phenix City, Alabama in 1957 to Joseph and Mattie Lou Newsome and had three siblings. She Graduated from Smith’s Station High School and went on to receive Bachelor’s degrees in Geology and later, became a Registered Nurse. In 1978, She married Larry W. Smith of Columbus, Georgia in the Washington D.C. Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sally dedicated the next part of her life to the raising, education and support of her children, As they grew into adults, Sally continued her fierce devotion to her family becoming a much beloved grandmother who would do anything to see her grandchildren happy. After her children were grown, Sally found a new way to spend her time ministering to those who needed her help. As a hospice nurse, Sally provided comfort, care and guidance to so many in her community and her patients, and their families showered her with appreciation for her conscientious care, which never wavered even while she underwent difficult cancer treatments herself. Sally enjoyed singing, telling stories, traveling with her family, learning about and discovering family history, taking her grandkids shopping, and making everyone around her laugh and feel special. Her favorite place was with her family and they know that she will continue to spend all of her time with them in spirit. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Walton Newsome and Mattie Lou Crenshaw and nieces Stephanie Wilkerson and Keri Galloway. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Larry Smith, her siblings, Brenda Galloway, Mike Newsome and Thomas Newsome, her children, Caleb Smith, Jacob Smith (Starleigh) and Kaitlyn Herrington (David) and her grandchildren, Jane, Sawyer and Eli Smith, and Rosalie, Aaron, Juliet and Camille Herrington. A memorial service will be held in Sally’s honor at the Thomasville Road Building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday, January 27th at 1:00 PM, 3717 Thomasville Rd, Tallahassee, FL.
