Thomas Robert Hendrix

Thomas Robert Hendrix passed peacefully, on September 11, 2026, with family and the loving angels of Big Bend Hospice by his side, closing a life defined by music, devotion, humor, and a profound love for the world around him. Born in Detroit, Michigan, (a fitting beginning for a musician whose heartbeat seemed to sync with the rhythm of the city), Tom grew into an avid rhythm guitarist and flute player who brought joy to everyone fortunate enough to hear him play. His weekly jam sessions with his brother Tim were among his happiest moments, filled with harmony, laughter, and the timeless influence of his favorite artists, Dave Mason and The Beatles. A gentle soul with a deep respect for animals and the natural world, Tom cared passionately about wildlife and its protection. He never forgot a birthday, and in fact, some of his family’s favorite gifts were the wildlife calendars he gave. He was also a lifelong Philadelphia Flyers fan, cheering with unwavering loyalty and playing ice hockey as a goalie well into his forties. His sharp wit and love of classic comedy made him a devoted admirer of The Three Stooges, and his curiosity for life made him an avid, thoughtful reader. Academically gifted, Tom earned a 4.0 GPA at Woodrow Wilson High School in Levittown, PA. His dedication to service led him to the United States Army, where he served proudly from 1971 to 1973 and was honorably discharged. He carried his patriotism and his love for Jesus quietly but deeply, with a dignity that never needed to announce itself. Throughout his life, Tom formed meaningful, lasting bonds. Friends became family, drawn to his kindness, humor, loyalty, and the unmistakable warmth he brought into every room. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Law Donald Hendrix and Helen Phillips Hendrix, and by his nephew, Daniel Phillips Hendrix. He is survived by his sister, Joy Hendrix Smythe, and his brother, Timothy Phillips Hendrix and wife, Dena. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Lee Smythe and husband, Jorge, Ian Smythe, Kelly Hendrix Reese and husband, John, and David Hendrix and wife, Meghan as well as his great-nieces, Kaia and Ayla Hendrix. Each of them carries forward his spirit, his stories, and the love he so freely gave. May his music continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him, and may his memory remain a blessing forever. A private interment will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery.
