Thomas J. Perkins, known to most as “Doc”, passed away on March 5, 2024 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to parents Joseph Thomas Perkins and Martha Aymond Perkins on April 10, 1950. He grew up in Chicago, but spent his summers as a youth in his mother’s hometown on the bayous of Bunkie, Louisiana. Tom completed Pre-Med at Florida State University prior to earning his Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine from National University of Health Sciences in Chicago, Illinois. He practiced in California before spending 25 years practicing in Tallahassee, where he later retired. When Tom wasn’t working, you could find him outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, diver and snow skier. He thoroughly enjoyed boating in general, even just for leisure. He loved traveling, often for a hunting or fishing expedition, both abroad and on camping road trips across America. His favorite homes were on the water in Alligator Point and Lake Talquin. He will be remembered for his colorful personality and incredible wit. Tom was blunt and direct; you always knew where you stood with him. Survivors include his beloved companion of nearly 40 years, Dixie Russell; niece Page Perkins and nephew Call Perkins as well as Dixie’s nephews Sam Rittgers, Jacob Rittgers and Ross Rittgers who he considered his own. Tom was proud of being an Eagle Scout as a young man and spent many an hour teaching his nephews how to fish, tie knots, boating skills, hunting, and some survival skills. He loved animals and raised exotic birds, chickens, rabbits as well as many dogs and cats. Tom also leaves behind many, many friends whom he loved deeply. He wanted them to know he passed away peacefully and had a “great ride”. A visitation will be held at Bevis Funeral Home on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.
